Responsible cognitive digital clones as decision-makers: A design science research study

2022

This study uses a design science research methodology to develop and evaluate the Pi-Mind agent, an information technology artefact that acts as a responsible, resilient, ubiquitous cognitive clone – or a digital copy – and an autonomous representative of a human decision-maker. Pi-Mind agents can learn the decision-making capabilities of their “donors” in a specific training environment based on generative adversarial networks. A trained clone can be used by a decision-maker as an additional resource for one’s own cognitive enhancement, as an autonomous representative, or even as a replacement when appropriate. The assumption regarding this approach is as follows: when someone was forced t…

Progetto Digital Twins: un sopralluogo analogico e digitale a Gratosoglio. Lo sguardo da Palermo

2022

The description of an ongoing project has the value of establishing some points of reflection useful to adjust the shot for the next phases of an experiment. In this paper, we are describing an ongoing project between Politecnico di Milano and Università degli Studi di Palermo. The feature on which this experimentation focuses is the analog/ digital survey, which tries to generate a “satellite” point of view, (a group of people physically in the analyzed area), and a “remote” one. The paper, firstly underlines the importance of surveys in urban planning, secondly displays the techniques, operators and equipment which are needed and it concludes with some considerations.

Health & safety 4.0: A digital twin reference model to support the smart operator at the workplace

2020

In the Industry 4.0 era, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things are the enabling technologies for a new tool, the Digital Twin, that allows a streamlined communication, automation and interoperability among all the production assets. Even if there has been a great deal of efforts toward digital twin engineering, little attention has been paid to the correct integration of humans in the emerging context of smart factories and, in particular, to the potential contribution of digital twins for supporting a health and safety 4.0 at the workplace. This paper sets the stage for a discussion over health and safety aspects for the Smart Operator and proposes a renewed approach to t…

Towards Digital Twinning on the Web: Heterogeneous 3D Data Fusion Based on Open-Source Structure

2023

Recent advances in Computer Science and the spread of internet connection have allowed specialists to virtualize complex environments on the web and offer further information with realistic exploration experiences. At the same time, the fruition of complex geospatial datasets (point clouds, Building Information Modelling (BIM) models, 2D and 3D models) on the web is still a challenge, because usually it involves the usage of different proprietary software solutions, and the input data need further simplification for computational effort reduction. Moreover, integrating geospatial datasets acquired in different ways with various sensors remains a challenge. An interesting question, in that r…

Digital Twin of HVAC system (HVACDT) for multiobjective optimization of energy consumption and thermal comfort based on BIM framework with ANN-MOGA

2022

This study proposes a novel Digital Twin framework of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVACDT) system to reduce energy consumption while increasing thermal comfort. The framework is developed to help the facility managers better understand the building operation to enhance the HVAC system function. The Digital Twin framework is based on Building Information Modelling (BIM) combined with a newly created plug-in to receive real-time sensor data as well as thermal comfort and optimization process through Matlab programming. In order to determine if the suggested framework is practical, data were collected from a Norwegian office building between August 2019 and October 2021 and used…

Co-simulated Digital Twin on the Network Edge: the case of platooning

2022

This paper presents an approach to create high fidelity Digital-Twin models for distributed multi-agent cyber-physical systems based on the combination of simulating components, generated from different modeling languages, each tailored for the specific domain of the subsystem. The approach specifically addresses the wireless communication domain, exploiting a Python module as a simulating component to evaluate the impact of network delay among the distributed elements of the system under analysis. A case study with a platoon of four vehicles following a leading car, all modeled in Simulink, is used to show the applicability of the approach, allowing the comparison between a Vehicle-to-Vehi…

Flooding in the Digital Twin Earth: The Case Study of the Enza River Levee Breach in December 2017

2023

The accurate delineation of flood hazard maps is a key element of flood risk management policy. Flood inundation models are fundamental for reproducing the boundaries of flood-prone areas, but their calibration is limited to the information available on the areas affected by inundation during observed flood events (typically fragmentary photo, video or partial surveys). In recent years, Earth Observation data have supported flood monitoring and emergency response (e.g., the Copernicus Emergency Service) thanks to the proliferation of available satellite sensors, also at high spatial resolution. Under this umbrella, the study investigates a levee breach that occurred in December 2017 along t…

OMiLAB: A Smart Innovation Environment for Digital Engineers

2020

This position paper introduces a Smart Innovation Environment for experimentation related to digital transformation projects, for the consolidation of a proposed "Digital Engineer" skill profile (with a business-oriented facet labelled as "Digital Innovator"). In the Internet of Things era, this profile implies the ability to perform both digital design and engineering activities, to semantically bridge multiple layers of abstraction and specificity - from business analysis down to cyber-physical engineering. In the paper's proposal, this integration is enabled by conceptual modelling methods and interoperable modelling tools, tailored to support the creation of Digital Twins for innovative…

Clinically-Driven Virtual Patient Cohorts Generation: An Application to Aorta

2021

The combination of machine learning methods together with computational modeling and simulation of the cardiovascular system brings the possibility of obtaining very valuable information about new therapies or clinical devices through in-silico experiments. However, the application of machine learning methods demands access to large cohorts of patients. As an alternative to medical data acquisition and processing, which often requires some degree of manual intervention, the generation of virtual cohorts made of synthetic patients can be automated. However, the generation of a synthetic sample can still be computationally demanding to guarantee that it is clinically meaningful and that it re…

Human Digital Twins in Acquiring Information About Human Mental Processes for Cognitive Mimetics

2022

Modern information technology makes it possible to redesign the ways people work. In the future, machines can carry out intelligence-requiring tasks, which previously were done by people. It is thus good to develop methodologies for designing intelligent systems. An example of such methods is cognitive mimetics, i.e. imitating human information processing. Today, machines cannot by themselves navigate in archipelagos. However, the fact that people can take care of ship steering and navigation means that there is an information process, which makes it possible to navigate ships. This information process takes place inside the minds of navigating people. If we are able to explicate the inform…
